Since Big Island’s Kilauea Volcano erupted on May 3, 2018, over 18 fissure vents have opened up on the volcano's East Rift Zone in the Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens subdivisions, destroying over 30 structures, many of which were homes- and forcing over 1,000 local residents to evacuate the dangerous lava flows and toxic sulfur dioxide fumes that have consumed the neighborhoods.
