A TOUR OF THE BIG ISLAND, HAWAII AT
ITS BEST
Hilo
| The next stop is Hilo,
the island's only real city, which curls around Hilo Bay. Hilo's charm is a blend of
old and new, east and west. Along the water front are a number of contemporary
hotels which look across the bay at the city. Right across the street from these
hotels is the Hilo Country Club golf course. |

|
One and two story tin-roof buildings housing
Chinese pawn shops, Japanese restaurants and grocery stores give old down-town Hilo a
delightful character of its own. At 8:00 every week day morning the Hilo fisherman
pull in with their catch to put on the auction block at Suisan fish market.
| This colorful fish sale at the waters
edge has been going on in its traditional way for as long as anyone can remember. Another
wonderful Hilo experience is the farmers market which takes place every Wednesday and
Saturday morning on Front Street in old down town. |

|
Here is a colorful collection of island products
and produce sold by the local farmers and craftsmen from all over the east end of the
island. The market is a treat to all of the senses as well as an interesting insight
to the different cultures that make up the Big Island life style.
| Lilioukalani Gardens is an elaborate
30 acre oriental park at the edge of the bay. It is designed and maintained in
authentic Japanese style. This lovely landscape is the largest formal oriental park
outside of Japan. |

|
| Just above town is Wailuku River State
Park with its dramatic view of Rainbow Falls spilling into a crystal pond below.
